Long lost ZX Popeye clone found! - April 25, 2009

Thanks to Peter Weighill for the heads up, but some exciting developments over at the World of Spectrum as Mark R Jones has uncovered a rather rare and previously unpreserved clone of the arcade game Popeye cheekily called "Popie".

Popie looks to be a rather nifty little conversion and certainly the best which the machine has seen.  Currently the game has been preserved and we are now awaiting a release on the World Of Spectrum which should be very iminant.  Keep an eye out on the new WOS entry which has just popped up.

Another great finding for the ZX Spectrum!…

GTW64 highlight - “Bugs Bunny” - April 18, 2009

For many years for GTW64, one of the largest scale searches has been for the elusive Daffy Duck by Hi-Tec Software.  Although we have been very close to finally releasing the game (With discussions still going on),  the search did uncover another surprise which arguably is just as important a finding as Daffy Duck would be.

Bugs Bunny - Private Detective was finished around the same time as Daffy Duck, but didn’t quite make the reviews before Hi-Tec went under, and so the game was pretty much never heard of to C64 users.  However, Dave Palmer managed to find the master disk and kindly loaned it to GTW64 to preserve.

A great finding overall and a great offer of hope for the future of finding the great Daffy Duck.  Well worth checking out if you haven’t already.  Read the story here… http://gtw64.retro-net.de/Pages/b/Review_Bugsbunny.php

Starpath Prototypes discovered! - April 16, 2009

From AtariAge’s main site… (Thanks Merman!)

Fifteen Starpath cassettes were discovered in Dallas, Texas last week, along with three Supercharger units. The Supercharger was in add-on module that expanded the RAM of the 2600 from 128 bytes to 6,272 bytes. This module, which connected to a cassette player to load games from tape, added high-resolution graphics and larger games for eager players.

Many of the tapes in this discovery have already been dumped. One of them is Excalibur version 36, another is a very early work-in-progress of Labyrinth whose third maze can be completed. Of the others, there is an earlier version of Excalibur with no number. There are also versions of Communist Mutants from Space and Suicide Mission that, so far, appear mostly complete.

The earliest versions of Excalibur and the Labyrinth tapes in this set both have second loads to them, however, it is unknown at this time if those loads are previews or if they contain additional levels from their respective games. All of the games dumped thus far have been NTSC.

Several AtariAge forum members are digging into these prototypes to see what’s new (actually, it’s "what’s old" in this case), so stay tuned! You can read about the original discovery of these games here and can download all the binaries and keep up on the latest updates in our Prototypes Forum.

‘The Mindwarp’ - a lost Maxis game - April 1, 2009

Not too much is known about The Mindwarp, but this was a nice looking Descent style game from 1996/97 which was being produced by Maxis software on the PC and which was advertised in a few places and magazines.

The game was reported by SEC as looking very unlikely to be released, and reports in 1997 confirm that the game was canned.  It’s not entirely clear why, but possibly the game was well overdue (as was Simcopter at the time) and it was felt that the game would not recoup enough money.

One of the designers, Garrett Smith, has the game listed as one of his credits - but no material of the game unfortunately.  The YouTube clip demonstrates some rare footage of the game which came as an extra to a Pinball game that Maxis released.  The same YouTube entry mentions that there was apparently a playable demo released on a Maxis compilation, but the compilation has not been located.

It is hoped that more can be found out about the game, and even playable versions located.  With one credit already, maybe there is a chance of digging this up someday.

Many thanks to Clint Basinger for highlighting this one! … We hope to have more on this one soon!
